Twenty kiwi mountain bikers are expected on the start line at the picturesque Italian Riviera this weekend for the opening round of the UCI MTB Enduro World Series. It is the first of back-to-back enduro world cups, with the second round in Poland next weekend.
There were mixed fortunes for young kiwi gravity riders at the opening round of the UCI MTB Downhill World Series in Scotland. Three New Zealand junior riders – Sacha Earnest, Eliana Hulsebosch and Luke Wayman - earned podium placings to cap an outstanding start to the downhill round of the world series. Kiwi mountain biker Sam Gaze dug deep to finish third overall on combined points for the opening round of the UCI MTB World Cup in Mairiporā, Brazil.
The second annual UCI Pump Track National Championships will head to the North Island, to be staged at the new Velosolutions track in Hawkes Bay.
The championships will be held at the Hawkes Bay BMX Club in Havelock North on Saturday 31 August and Sunday 1 September, 2024. New Zealand riders dominated the UCI Oceania MTB Championships cross-country in Queensland.
Kiwi riders won both female and male titles in elite, under-23 men, and under-19 men and women races to record an outstanding sweep for the visitors at the Mt Cotton course, south of Brisbane. National champion Anton Cooper leads a 21-strong New Zealand contingent across the Tasman for the 2024 UCI Oceania MTB cross-country championships in Queensland. The event carries continental ranking points, as elite kiwi riders chase qualification for the Paris Olympics, with New Zealand in a close battle to qualify two male riders for cross-country, along with a qualifying slot for females. After facing wet conditions during the track walk and training sessions on Friday, the weather was in favour of athletes and trail builders alike. Exposed to plenty of sunshine throughout the weekend, the Taniwha trail in Rotorua’s Whakarewarewa forest was in pristine condition for the first Crankworx event of the year, marking both the kickoff of the Crankworx World Tour and the exhilarating 10-year anniversary of Crankworx Rotorua. Some of the world’s top athletes gathered to compete on the iconic volcanic soil of Aotearoa. The young guns fired in resounding fashion in downhill competition to dominate the honours at the Torpedo7 MTB National Championships in Queenstown. After some inclement weather for cross-country yesterday, riders and fans enjoyed warm and sunny conditions at the excellent Coronet Peak facilities.
Canterbury’s Anton Cooper bagged his ninth elite cross-country title with an emphatic performance at the Torpedo7 MTB National Championships in Queenstown.
The 29-year-old Trek Factory professional was in a class of his own, opening a 22 second gap on the opening lap of six at Coronet Peak, going on to win by a minute after buttoning off over the final lap. Meanwhile Under-23 World champion Sammie Maxwell from Taupo claimed her fourth straight elite women’s crown in equally dominant fashion, winning by nearly five minutes in a display of power and precision. |
